This is the perfect day to turn the man of the house loose in the kitchen to prepare something (anything) that you don’t have to cook. She says smiling and with tongue in cheek.
Baking powder biscuits fresh from the oven, smothered in butter and topped with honey or jam. Always a treat, especially when someone else takes charge and whips up a batch.
Baking Powder Biscuits
- 2 cups of all purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 cup of shortening
- 1 cup of milk
Mix together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Use your hands to blend to a fine crumb consistency.
Make a well in the middle and slowly add milk.
Stir dough vigorously until it comes away from the sides.
Turn dough onto a lightly floured board and softly knead for a few minutes. The dough should not be sticky.
Pat or roll out to desired thickness - 1/2” to 3/4” is good.
Use a knife or cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Place on un-greased baking sheet.
Bake in a hot oven for 12-15 minutes until browned. That would be 400 F.
Makes 10-15 biscuits depending on the size and shape you cut out.
Salt & Shortening - Called for in original recipe, we use salted butter or margarine and omit the salt
