Feeding The Birds

​It would seem that here in Canada we don’t recognize what I call the little things in life near enough.  Our neighbours to the South have lists of National Days whereby everything from bubble gum to birds has a Day. 

Drawing from the calendar of National Days, I find several that are interesting, intriguing and just plain fun. 

February, for example, is National Feed The Bird Month. Now, it is nice that it is recognized the birds need to be fed in February, but to set the record straight, if you are going to feed them for one month and expect to have throngs of birds at your feeders, I would argue that point. It takes them a little while to find you if you have never fed them before, and even then it’s not guaranteed they will keep coming back. ​

I feed birds year around. Granted, in the summer months when there is lots of natural feed, I cut back; however, once the weather starts to turn cold in the fall, I increase the quantity of feed I put out. Unfortunately, they are all flying pigs! Pigs that will consume whatever amount of food you put out for them, and in short order once you have a following at your feeders. ​

Feeding the birds became a part of our life years ago. One that brings much pleasure to the day when I have the opportunity to watch while the feeders entice the birds to fill up on the morsels I have left for them. In fact, this pastime inspired Birds in my Canadian Backyard. A book that not only identifies birds that come to our feeders, it also identifies birds we have seen in our travels. Some we only see as they migrate, others are here year around, and others are evasive and always provide excitement at the occasional chance sighting.
