You would think writing a children’s book would take no time at all. The story is short and there are not many pages; unfortunately, that is the rose coloured glass overview from those who have possibly never attempted to publish a children’s book. The truth is, the story may take less than a few hours to write the first draft, but that is when the work begins. Usually, there are several edits and then it’s sent off to beta readers, which normally results in another edit before being sent to an editor. While all this is going on, you work with an illustrator to bring the story alive. Finally, after months of the preliminary steps, it goes to a publisher and the waiting begins again until the author copy arrives for final review before going live to the world through social media channels. Still, there is more to do. To sell from my website, copies need to be ordered from a printer. Depending where trusted printers are located, this could take an additional month +/- to have the books delivered. I can’t tell you how happy I am to have received the author’s copy of MUS, A Mouse Adventure. It has been approved and is now available online through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. MUS, A Mouse Adventure will be available on our website as soon as they arrive from the printer.

Oh, I know there are specials days to celebrate on just about every day of every month. But April 2 is a day we recognize children’s books from around the world. This is the first year we have been able to share such a book with you. Barn Cat Buttons Meets Princess Kylie is the first in our Barn Cat Buttons Series. It’s about a barn cat with an attitude who finds himself entertaining a Jack Russel dog from England. He’s guided through this adventure with the help of his spirit friend, Wise One. Illustrations by artist and illustrator, Karon Argue captivate the imagination on every page. Barn Cat Buttons Meets Princess Kylie entertains children of all ages.

In the beginning, the story was destined to be one book about a barn cat with an attitude, and it had a different title. After a two-hour plane ride, and an hour waiting for a conference to start, the ugly first draft was complete. At the conference, I had the pleasure of a chance meeting with Dana Wand. Unbeknown to me at the time, she is a writer of children’s books. She was the first person to read what is now Barn Cat Buttons Meets Princess Kylie. On a scrap piece of paper, Dana wrote her testimonial about my first children’s book. A cherished piece of paper of the book’s beginnings. Writing children’s books is not any different than other genres when it comes right down to it. You still need to edit. You still need to create a book cover. The biggest challenge was finding beta readers and an illustrator. People who would understand and appreciate my characters. My beta readers were all children in the eight to eleven year old age range. It was interesting to hear their honest feedback. Some were wordy, others wondered how the sheets of paper were going to become a book. It was a fresh and enlightening experience working with these junior beta readers. During the time that I was getting feedback from the beta readers, I was also interviewing illustrators. The submission I received did not resonate with the story. In the end, it is my connections with the Dames on the Range that had me meeting with Karon Argue. Her submissions spoke volumes about how she would breathe life into the book’s pages. Not only did she ‘get’ the story, but her illustrations made me laugh. Karon brought the characters to life in a way that I had not imagined could happen. I learned many things through the illustration process of this book. One of which is you sometimes need to rewrite part of the story because of a small detail that shows up in pictures. I learned about the meticulous hours spent creating art to match words. I learned it’s okay to say, “I love that,” or “nope, it has to be different.” I learned my expectations of the quality of work I envisioned for this book were attainable. I learned that having the right illustrator at the helm is key. As I said, it doesn’t happen overnight. It has now been over a year since the words of my first children’s book were born. What an exhilarating experience seeing the project finally come to life. To finally be able to introduce you to our story about the barn cat with an attitude. It is still not the conventional outline, and the story goes where the prompts take me. One week I think I know how things will play out only to have the next week throw a wrench into that theory. You can follow my unconventional outline process and read Hanna's Story as it evolves. Will there be changes and additions when the outline eventually morphs into a book? You betcha! Being an independent writer, or Indie Writer as the world commonly knows us, we depend on the people who read our books to help us move up in the ranks in places like, KOBO, Amazon, iBooks, and Kindle. Without the reviews, the book sits unnoticed at the bottom of the huge number of other publications in any given genre. I liken our plight to music and movie, the more reviews, the more people will notice and buy, the more it climbs the charts. Like so many others out there, I too love to download and read free books. What better way to determine if you truly want to read more by the same author. What better way to see how others write in your chosen genre (if you are a writer). What better way to improve your vocabulary. Besides the fact that reading is just good for the mind and soul. I diligently try to accomplish the reviews for books I have read in a timely manner; however, sometimes it takes me a little longer than even I like. Yet, the knowledge that these writers appreciate my time in doing so, gives me hope that others will do the same for me. So when you read a book, any book, be it the old fashioned hold in your hand style or an E-book, please take the time to squirrel the title out on any of these prominent bookseller locations and leave your thoughts, your star rating. If you are surfing the net, this only takes but a few minutes out of your precious time and is so, so appreciated by us, the Indie Writers. Author, Photographer, Lover of Life "Capturing moments others may never get to experience." We are all capable of telling a story, sharing information and creating ditties. The first draft of any genre is easy. It’s what we do with them in the end that makes the difference. The ensuing work can make the choice of turning it into a book not all it’s cracked up to be. My inner spirit was compelled to write a book. No, it wasn’t a bucket list item, it was a need. A call out to the creative soul that had simmered since childhood. So, let’s rewind the film and take a look at the books, one book at a time. Thinking the book publishing process through, and wanting to get a book published in the shortest time period, with the least amount of cost, equals e-book format. However, regardless of genre, the preparation, in my opinion, takes more time for electronic books versus a manuscript destined for a publisher. Once the idea topic has hatched from the egg, it still needs due diligence. Correctness, flow, eye catching presentation, plus conforming with guidelines set out by the publisher. The crux is you are writer, editor, cover designer and publisher. The bonus, and it is a huge attraction to most, is the lack of an exorbitant outlay of dollars. An e-book is not hard on the bank balance, but it can suck the time bank dry!
The writing was now on the wall. The hook had been set. The bait taken, and the challenge of what was to become referred to as a ‘real book’ started to take life. Moon Rising: An Eclectic Collection of Works was a relatively easy book to produce. Archived and newly written vignettes, short stories and poems cuddled together to for my first taste of a publisher’s world. It also gave me a penchant for what was to unfold, a novel; and, not just one novel, but three. Each storyline with their own set of characters. In essence, three different books about three different topics, in the fire at the same time. All in a race to see which would boil to a finish first. Whoa! When the light came on as to what I was doing, the decision wasn't even debated. Finish The Quiet Spirits first and let the other two simmer in the back ground. Having them to fall back on when the stagnant times hit was great. I drifted between the other two. Penning a chapter or more until I found my ground again to return to the book destined to be the next to go to a publisher. I am not surprised by the amount of time it took to write the first draft, complete edits and rewrites (so far) for The Quiet Spirits. It is a novel, after all. But once submitted to the publisher the process seems to drag and be lengthy. Patience plays a big part in the publishing waiting game. Will there be more suggestions and/or will the nod come that we are onto the next steps? Still on track for release by the fall of this year.
I have written e-books and like the simplicity of their production for sharing information and short stories. I have written a compilation of varying genres, only to tap into a simmering passion to write in more detail. The emotional adventure writing a novel has taken me on is an experience I would not trade.
Regardless of the style, the story, the sharing of information, or the format, I look forward to the future of my writing. Short term to way, way out there. Embracing the compositions that fill the pages. How do you support Indie Writers - ebooks or real books? Ann Edall-Robson
