Christmas morning, in my opinion, has gotten lost in the modern society. I see today's version as a commercial, money grabbing, bling infested holiday.
The first day of fall has barely made the calendar and signs of Christmas are showing up in stores and advertising. Let the shopping frenzy begin! I need, I want, I gotta get that, is on the lips of old and young alike.

 | I may be old fashioned, but I like the part about Christmas that brings family and friends together. Baking special treats. Making gifts. Visits with friends and neighbours. Playing cards and board games. Taking time to watch each other open gifts. Men folk sound asleep in the easy chair. Kids outside playing (in the snow), and saying Merry Christmas. |
I like to include small gifts that have meaning. Each year (still) my children receive a tree ornament to add to their collection that was started for them at their first Christmas.
To keep the cost spread out over the year, I keep a list under immediate family names that record things they have shown interest in throughout the year. This is a double edged list because it also helps with purchases for birthdays and other special occasions. And, now is the time that I ask for their own personal wish list for review and consideration.
“Really? What on earth for? Why go to so much trouble with the lists, baking, DIY projects and shopping all year?” You ask. My answer is go keep from having to participate in a roller derby environment when the days get closer to the holiday season. My shopping is done and probably wrapped. I have removed myself from the stress and haggard feeling that others experience in the last few weeks before Christmas. I am able to enjoy my last minute preparations without the feeling that someone turned the blender on high and I am in a vortex of no return.
