The warm breath before the sensation of his facial hair tickling along the neckline of her shirt made her giggle. She playfully pushed him away with a gentle hand. She didn’t mind the interruption, cleaning stalls was not her favourite chore, but a necessary one. She felt him nibbling at her ear, and giggled. Turning, she buried her face in his warm neck. He was the sweetest thing in her life. Certainly better than a bowl of cherries. Stepping away from her embrace, he reached for the oat pail. Laughing, she scolded the foal. “You’re nothing but cupboard love.” I could watch baby animals for hours, especially when it comes to horses. Their long gangly legs seem to be a surprise to them when they play - jumping, kicking, and flat out running. They are like any child, often too smart for their own good, and inquisitive, which can get them into trouble. Let’s not forget the love of treats and a good scratch. It takes them time to trust, but if their momma is okay with you, they will soon make the first move to greet you. From their need for attention, to being aloof and shy, a foal is a character worth the time you can spend around them. July 25, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story sweet as cherries. It can be about the fruit or something cherries represent. Why is it sweet? Can you use contrast to draw out the beauty? Moving from the horizon Towards the unsuspecting Unafraid of openness Nothing stops the charge Tracking their movement Anticipation stirs, a calm elation Visible on the child’s face No fear in the eyes of one so young Imagination has no limits Excitement tingles through tiny limbs Shapeshifters float into view Above the grassy blanket Each different, hovering overhead Friend, foe, pleasing, and menacing These shapeshifters gather Arriving as one, leaving together Travelling in the wind A game of guessing, identifying Images in clouds, their transition Leaving their story to be told By those who see the shapes The child within A lot of summer afternoons were spent cloud watching as a child. Seeing cloud shapes morph into something completely different, like a slow motion video. I called them shapeshifters long before I knew the meaning of the word, and now it seems apropos to continue with the description. It’s never too late in life to enjoy the pleasures of the imagination. Have you ever sprawled on your back on the grass to watch the clouds float overhead? Have you ever been driving down the road when a fluffy shape catches your eye in the sky? Have you ever been relaxing on the deck and had the privilege to see distinct shapes appear in the sky?
July 18, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about floating. Who is floating, where, and in what? Is the floating real or felt internally? Whatever floats your boat, go where the prompt leads! #AnnEdallRobson #FromWhereICome #99Words #FlashFiction #farmerslife #ranchtradition #ranchlife #mosquito #cloudstory #writingresearch #heartcloud #thankafarmer #thankarancher #ConnectWithThePast #thunderstorm #cloudonfire #faceintheclouds #cartooncharacterclouds #animalclouds #storiesofthepast #shapeshifters #CapturingMomentsOthersMayNeverGetToExperience #CozyMysteries #cookbooks #PromptWriting #WesternHeritage #TheOldWays #RanchCulture #BeginningToEnd #RuralLiving #WhoaBackUpStop #AnnEdallRobsonPhotography
The slender bodies in green standing guard over me need to move aside for me to feel the sun on my face. I’m tired, but I am a fighter, it will be worth it. Last night rain fell, leaving drops behind on my outer self. That doesn’t matter, I need to keep on track, everyone around me is expecting me to show my true colours. It’s a lot of pressure, every year is the same. I know I’m up for it because I’m one of the hundreds of daylily plants in the garden that blooms only for a day. The Day Lily is a glorious addition to the garden. You either love them or hate them as they will overtake any space they are allowed to. From tiny blooms to flowers the size of a small dinner plate, they wave in the breeze before disappearing to make room for the next bloom to spread its petals in the sun. We have them growing along the fence. Every so often, an unsuspecting helper thinks they are some form of grass and sharpens their weed eater skills on them. The plants may not bloom that year, but their greenery keeps growing. A reminder that they will try again next year if they can’t force at least one bloom to show itself before the frost hits and winter snow blankets the ground.
July 11, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story inspired by the idea, “for a day.” It doesn’t need to be never-ending, like me forgetting to update a prompt. What is so special about the action, person, or object experienced for a day? Go where the prompt leads! #AnnEdallRobson #FromWhereICome #99Words #FlashFiction #farmerslife #ranchtradition #ranchlife #foraday #onlyoneday #24hoursandgone #bloomforaday #thankafarmer #thankarancher #ConnectWithThePast #storiesofthepast #restingplace #CapturingMomentsOthersMayNeverGetToExperience #CozyMysteries #cookbooks #PromptWriting #WesternHeritage #TheOldWays #RanchCulture #BeginningToEnd #RuralLiving #WhoaBackUpStop #AnnEdallRobsonPhotography
