We take so much for granted in our growing up years. People, places and material things are just there. We expect them to always be there and to always look the same. We often leave that comfort zone for the grandiose thoughts of greener pastures. Returning occasionally to visit only to find the years have changed what we thought would be constant in our life. The main street is no longer dirt. Pathways through the trees have disappeared. Our childhood home looks nothing like what we grew up in; and, the bench that was our best friend has been left to the elements, deteriorating, graying and worn. Nothing is the same. When we take the trip back in time to the memories we cherish, our heart aches for the old ways. You came to me for quiet moments to write your thoughts. We had interludes in our time together when you introduced me to your family as it grew. Boisterous and fun-loving, they clambered over my seat and jumped from my back. Even as the seasons changed, you made time for me. Dusting the leaves away in the fall and clearing the snow in winter. Life changes for all of us. I see you watching me from within your confines, no longer able to make your way down the path to be with me. I miss our time together.
