Old School or E-Reader

I am old school when it comes to books. I like the feel of something tangible in my hand, the swoosh of paper as you turn a page and the smell, oh the smell of the ink melding with the paper. I could go on and on about being able to go to the book shelf to pick one of my favourites volumes to read. It's like having my own private library.
Let's face it, we are not all like me and I have to say, I am open to downloading and reading ebooks. It's a convenience I have come to appreciate when I can't decide which book I want to take on a trip and end up taking several just in case. The weight factor of several paper published books makes for an additional piece of luggage and the ultimate need to still decide which one will be read.
Enter the e-book phenom into my travelling life. I am able to take along ALL of my books if I want and have only to deal with under two pounds of weight and no extra luggage.
Of course, there is a need for some sort of electricity to keep the iPad happy, thus me happy. But in the case of not knowing if I will have a place to charge my 'reader', and yes, that happens, I carry small charging cells that fit easily into my iPad case.
I am not abandoning my books on the shelf. That is not going to happen. I am merely embracing modern technology.

I'm with you Ann -- I much prefer books or "hard copy" as it is now called in this digital world.

Old school books is very much alive in the digital world.

Ann, the irony of writing so much is that I now have difficulty holding a book in my hands, especially the big volumes I tend to read. I bought a Kindle PaperWhite five years ago and was skeptical, but I love it! It is backlit, so it doesn't bother my eyes (or my husband) when I go to bed late and read. I can buy books (dangerous) at the swipe of a finger and my battery lasts for almost two weeks so I don't have to worry about charging it up like a phone. I'll always be old school and have physical books around me but my Kindle gives me freedom to read more.

Being able to meld both worlds together and continue to read when and where we like is a much appreciated plus in our lives.

Great question, Ann. I read paper books and ebooks on my Kindle app on my iPad. I'll add a third to the list as well - audiobooks. I love all three and read in the different media at different times and places for different purposes. I love the new technology for the flexibility it gives me.

Norah, it is nice having the flexibility of modern technology when I travel. The best part is not having to decide which book I am actually going to take with me.

Hi Ann, I found you on the Carrot Ranch site and thought I'd check out your blog. I'm with you on both fronts. If I'm reading for pure enjoyment, I love both, but traveling with Kindle is pleasurable. Funny thing, though, I buy 100% of my paperback books at the airport. If I'm studying the style or content of a book, I like paper even though you can highlight on a Kindle. If I'm going to write a review, I love the digital version because I can pick out quotes and find things I liked more easily. Fun article. Marsha Ingrao

Welcome, Marsha. Thank you for your comments. My choice of book seems to still be leaning towards old school. By the way, the Carrot Ranch is a great place to connect with literary artisans.
