Thanksgiving in Canada is the second Monday of October. If we are lucky, the weather will be without snow, as is the case this year. For me, this day is one that accentuates all of the things that I give thanks for, every day.
Over the years, I find my list of the people, places and things I appreciate continues to grow. They all resonate with three important things: where I was raised, how I was raised, and who raised me. A lifestyle and upbringing I consider myself lucky to have been gifted with.
I have chosen twenty thankful thoughts from the lengthy list I have compiled in my lifetime, and they all could be expounded on in volumes. However, on this Thanksgiving Day, a single sentence is a reminder for me to reflect on how fortunate I am.

- Being born into a family that lived in a rural part of the country.
- Manners, morals and respect.
- Self-sufficiency was a way of life.
- Treadle sewing machines were common.
- Coal oil lanterns lit the rooms at night.
- Playing outside in the rain, sunshine, snow and cold.
- Television and telephones were a luxury.
- The radio brought entertainment, news, and the latest hits.
- Doing chores.
- Finding shapes in the clouds and riding horses under the stars in the moonlight.
- Eating our meals together.
- Learning math by playing cribbage.
- You knew your neighbours and could depend on them.
- Boys got into fights that ended in black eyes and fat lips.
- People read books and cherished the volumes they kept on the shelf.
- Letters were written and mailed to those living far away.
- Going out for dinner was a special occasion.
- Learning to drive on gravel roads and hay fields.
- Overcoming the lurch caused by not engaging the clutch long enough to shift gears.
- Working hard, playing hard, enjoying each day to the fullest.
I am often heard to say, “Where I am from guides me on my journey to where I go.”
