Seeds in the ground, hay fields turn green. Looking skyward, watching for what Mother Nature deems she will bestow. Will there be too much rain or not enough? Calves are born, and like the postman, they show up in every kind of weather, at no set time. First time heifers need help, seasoned cows birth without a hitch. Crops of grain, hay, and calves. Commodities are a livelihood, dependent on so much, and the price at sale time. Every day, the farmer and rancher work. Days off are few and far between. Just one chapter that feeds the country.

And then you hear on the radio about 28 dairy farms that were informed their milk buyer was no longer buying.
It is the riskiest of businesses, farming and ranching. I think the best security is in small scale local growing/marketing and that is definitely a trend, with CSA's and stores and restaurants using local products.
What I meant to say was, I enjoyed your flash.

I hear you, D. There are those who are diversifying to make sure they can keep going. We are seeing B & B with cattle operations, Cottage Crafts with grain producers, etc. And thanks, I am glad you enjoyed my flash.

I worked for a ranch in Montana many years back. I kept the books, did payroll, etc. Some of my happiest times were when I got to visit the ranch. I learned so much. Thanks for such great memories prompted by your flash. <3

I so enjoy your stories and pictures of ranch life. I grew up near dairy farms and small black angus herds. Seeing the calves in springtime was the best. My mother used to take me to a farm that also had lambs and piglets. And I've always wanted a goat....
