Memories spin in her head like an old news reel. A young woman, waiting for the cue to board the Aquitania. Leaving all she knew, to follow her soldier husband to a foreign land across the Atlantic. Her Gran seeing her off. The cabin, her new home, wind blowing through cracks. Wood stove, frozen water buckets, and learning to cook. A mother-in-law who never thought she was good enough. The bairns lost. The two who lived. The girl now has daughters of her own. Five generations of women blazing their trail with grit, determination, laughter and tears. Writing about the life of a WWII war bride in 99 words is not an easy feat. Especially when you know the woman, the story. It took another 1000+/- words to do the condensed version. From that, paring it down further to tell a snippet of the story, creating an image of the woman. Eventually, I will take on the task of writing Mom's story; but, for now, I give you 99 words about an amazing woman. May 9, 2022 Prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a mom selfie — a story that creates an image of a mom. No one mom looks alike or fits a maternal mold. Who is she? This reminds me of my gran who left Britain aboard a ship with her new husband in Feb. 1920 to Western Canada. She was my inspiration!

While slightly different - I'm sure my own grandmothers who left their 'Mother' countries... had similar experiences. One ended up the second wife getting a step son who wasn't as respectful as he could have been (especially in later years). She ended up having and losing her own children...

There are a lot of similar stories that have evolved over history.

Ann, this story reads like the tale of all the women who came before us. Well told. <3

I can imagine how difficult this story was to get down to the 99 words when each sentence probably has 10 more to tell. You did a good job capturing a snapshot though. Can you imagine the fear someone would feel leaving their home for not only a new life, but a new life half a world away?

Thank you for your kind words, Michael. This has been one of my biggest 99 word challenges. I am happy to say, though, that it prompted me to just write and write and write. I now have a launch pad for many more stories about Mom.

Ann, that's an amazing story about your Mum. Even in 99 words, I feel her strength. I think her full story needs to be told.

Mom's story will be told. I have lots of notes and recorded visits to bring it to life - one day.

Hats off to the women who forge ahead. I wish it were as easy to get along with the in-laws as it is the chosen spouse.

Isn't that so true, Sue. In-laws have a way of sometimes making life unbearable.
