The squabbling would soon begin. All in good fun, but the aroma of bread baking wafting through the house, was the instigator.
“It’s my turn!”
“No, it’s not! You got the heel last time.”
Reminiscent of conversations that had been passed down from generation to generation, the sound of her grandchildren’s words made her laugh.
It was as if they had forgotten that each loaf came with two ends, and therefore had two heels, which resulted in each child receiving the homemade treat of thick sliced warm bread slathered with butter and a smearing of homemade sour cherry jam.
“It’s my turn!”
“No, it’s not! You got the heel last time.”

The bantering that goes on for the heel never gets old. To this day, it can be a conversation that leads to sneaky antics and slight, very slight, untruths. All played out to make sure you are the recipient of said heel.
The aroma of the bread baking is a certain give away that the tasty morsel will be available; however, if you are the baker, you have an inside track as to when it’s going to emerge from the oven. With any luck at all, others in the house may smell it cooking but when they ask when it will be ready, the words, “In a while,” seem to ward them off. The need to share may arise when they hear the oven door being closed, or the bread being turned out of the pans onto the wire racks, or any other sixth sense that tells them they had best get to the kitchen, and fast.
With the invention of bread makers, another dilemma may come to light, depending on the style of loaf the bread maker produces. There are two heels, but they can come in different configurations, and often one has a paddle hole going through its middle. The heel with a hole is not as appealing to some, but it is all in the perception of the person who really and truly thinks they are a heel aficionado.
Of course, if you live alone and still make your own bread, unless you have company drop in, there is no debate as to who is going to get the heel(s). Even then, you don’t have to be that polite person who shares.
The thing to remember is this…you may not be the one who gets the heel, but homemade bread, whether it’s the heel or one of the many other slices, when the bread is served warm, it all tastes wonderful slathered with butter, topped with a dollop of homemade jam, or drizzled with honey.
