What better way to start April than by celebrating Children’s International Book Day. Oh, I know there are specials days to celebrate on just about every day of every month. But April 2 is a day we recognize children’s books from around the world. This is the first year we have been able to share such a book with you. Barn Cat Buttons Meets Princess Kylie is the first in our Barn Cat Buttons Series. It’s about a barn cat with an attitude who finds himself entertaining a Jack Russel dog from England. He’s guided through this adventure with the help of his spirit friend, Wise One. Illustrations by artist and illustrator, Karon Argue captivate the imagination on every page. Barn Cat Buttons Meets Princess Kylie entertains children of all ages.

In the beginning, the story was destined to be one book about a barn cat with an attitude, and it had a different title. After a two-hour plane ride, and an hour waiting for a conference to start, the ugly first draft was complete. At the conference, I had the pleasure of a chance meeting with Dana Wand. Unbeknown to me at the time, she is a writer of children’s books. She was the first person to read what is now Barn Cat Buttons Meets Princess Kylie. On a scrap piece of paper, Dana wrote her testimonial about my first children’s book. A cherished piece of paper of the book’s beginnings. Writing children’s books is not any different than other genres when it comes right down to it. You still need to edit. You still need to create a book cover. The biggest challenge was finding beta readers and an illustrator. People who would understand and appreciate my characters. My beta readers were all children in the eight to eleven year old age range. It was interesting to hear their honest feedback. Some were wordy, others wondered how the sheets of paper were going to become a book. It was a fresh and enlightening experience working with these junior beta readers. During the time that I was getting feedback from the beta readers, I was also interviewing illustrators. The submission I received did not resonate with the story. In the end, it is my connections with the Dames on the Range that had me meeting with Karon Argue. Her submissions spoke volumes about how she would breathe life into the book’s pages. Not only did she ‘get’ the story, but her illustrations made me laugh. Karon brought the characters to life in a way that I had not imagined could happen. I learned many things through the illustration process of this book. One of which is you sometimes need to rewrite part of the story because of a small detail that shows up in pictures. I learned about the meticulous hours spent creating art to match words. I learned it’s okay to say, “I love that,” or “nope, it has to be different.” I learned my expectations of the quality of work I envisioned for this book were attainable. I learned that having the right illustrator at the helm is key. As I said, it doesn’t happen overnight. It has now been over a year since the words of my first children’s book were born. What an exhilarating experience seeing the project finally come to life. To finally be able to introduce you to our story about the barn cat with an attitude. It is still not the conventional outline, and the story goes where the prompts take me. One week I think I know how things will play out only to have the next week throw a wrench into that theory. You can follow my unconventional outline process and read Hanna's Story as it evolves. Will there be changes and additions when the outline eventually morphs into a book? You betcha! It would seem that here in Canada we don’t recognize what I call the little things in life near enough. Our neighbours to the South have lists of National Days whereby everything from bubble gum to birds has a Day. Drawing from the calendar of National Days, I find several that are interesting, intriguing and just plain fun. February, for example, is National Feed The Bird Month. Now, it is nice that it is recognized the birds need to be fed in February, but to set the record straight, if you are going to feed them for one month and expect to have throngs of birds at your feeders, I would argue that point. It takes them a little while to find you if you have never fed them before, and even then it’s not guaranteed they will keep coming back. I feed birds year around. Granted, in the summer months when there is lots of natural feed, I cut back; however, once the weather starts to turn cold in the fall, I increase the quantity of feed I put out. Unfortunately, they are all flying pigs! Pigs that will consume whatever amount of food you put out for them, and in short order once you have a following at your feeders.
Do you feed the birds in your part of the world? Ann Edall-Robson Author, Photographer, Lover of Life "Capturing moments others may never get to experience." #AnnEdallRobson #FeedTheBirds #TheQuietSpirits #WinterGrounding
A whispering moment penetrates through the garden gate, up the steps and through the scent that mingles and mixes in the cooling, evening breeze. The blanket of night is near. An adventure transforming through illumination as windows flicker to life, declaring their existence under thatched crowns melding with old stone walls. Their panes casting rays, penetrating the shadows close by, embellishing the darkening life that exists in its path. A breath of wind shakes life into the apple blossoms watching over the Hydrangeas and Azaleas dancing freely to their own beat. Yellow Roses nod their luscious heads, sending soft aromas out to marry with the Lavender and Jasmine tucked near the stone pathways. Lilacs hover over Nightshades and Primrose, casting eery shapes in the dwindling light. Sheltering the delicate blooms with outstretched limbs. As evening slips into the night the garden settles itself to rest in anticipation of the window light fading into daybreak. Welcoming tiny droplets of dew ready to sparkle like cast-off gems across petals and leaves. Lilliputian lakes left to refresh Ladybugs and Bees that will come to visit in the warming sun of the day to come. It’s a guessing game of who and what really reside here in the overgrown, yet sculptured, palette of colours. Creativity is everywhere, all tiny reminders that the garden is home to the imagination of many.
