Is it Time to Start Spring Cleaning?

Recently, something happened quite by accident, sort of, at least it started out that way . . .

It was a busy week. Appointments, a pop-up book signing event, office duties, travel, accounting (ugh), and a wonderful overnight stay at our favourite B & B.

Each morning, something that is part of my daily schedule is to peruse my emails. I know, what’s so unusual about that, we all do it, right? But, what I found myself doing was scanning for notifications from people I knew and glossing over, without opening, newsletters and other bits of information I have signed up to receive. I didn’t even delete them or file them for later. I just left them there accumulating to almost a point of no return, almost!

A decision had to be made. Leave well enough alone and let all of this mail arrive without opening it and ultimately hitting the read later (which I don’t seem to get around to doing), or just delete (which seems to be the norm). The other option is to do some serious house cleaning by unsubscribing to a bunch this mail. The latter is the most realistic because let’s face it, if I keep getting them and not bother opening them, they are considered of no use to me, so why bother wasting the time of having them arrive?

Perhaps, at one time, the writer of these daily, weekly and monthly notices was of interest to me because of projects I was working on or general data they provided. What seems normal in all of this, is if I have moved on, so should they.
Today must be the day to start spring cleaning. The sun is shining, it’s too cold to be wandering around outside and since I can now see about 60% of my desk after purging and filing stuff away, it must be the day to clear out the emails.
How do you keep on top of the emails, subscriptions or otherwise, in your inbox?
Here are a few more inbox thoughts.

Throw a Rock and Watch the Ripples

Throw a rock into the water and watch the ripples flow outward, reaching the unknown, affecting all in its path.

In business, it's known as networking. A concept of promoting yourself and your work to friends, family, and perfect strangers. You tell one person. That person shares with two others, and so the spread of information starts.

Not an easy task for people who prefer (willingly) to do anything they can, for anyone else. Gladly doing so as long as there is no public recognition. Yet, often we find these so-called wallflowers, behind the scenes people are an amazing artist, musicians, writers, and entrepreneurs. You may hear them say things like, “No one is interested what I do.”
Well, people, you need to change the way you think.  It’s not necessary to spend money to get product marketing off the ground. It will, however, take an investment of your time; and, in the beginning, more time than you think you have.

“How can I do this without spending my life’s savings?”

The answer is simple, an internet connection. With it, the world of social media is at your beck and call and each available avenue should be considered.

There is no need to open an account for every social media platform you come across. Choose the one(s) beneficial to your promotional needs.  Start slow, pick one or two that meld together and ultimately showcase your business. Grow your online visibility and add to your harem of followers.

Two of the bonuses of social media marketing come from planning and execution. Posting to one platform will, in most cases, be capable of automatic entry on others. And, pre-scheduling posts to show up in the future. Both have great benefits to time management and social networking.

In theory, pre-scheduling posts allow you to spend as much time as you want in the preparation. The result is having the information go live at your desired strategic time.

An original post to one platform links to your other social media accounts. The data shows up at the same time in multiple places. The work is done once and has the possibility of being networked out to thousands. The ripple in the pond!

This is not to say that all you need is social media networking to promote you, your product or your business. But think about it, it's only the beginning and if done consistently, it gives you the time to get out from in front of your computer and pursue other live networking opportunities.

Homework

Homework! Rushing at the end to put something together. Anything that will placate my mind. Showing I cared enough to write. It saddens me to think that I am not sure I will meet the task and the criteria.

Oh yes, I wrote. And I wrote some more but not about the prompts that should have inspired me. My trail took me towards the completion of a short story first draft. I dodged off here and there. Writing several other short pieces. In there somewhere an invitation to write a 2000 word piece for an anthology prompts me to finish its first draft.

The homework kept popping up on the screen as a reminder. Rearing its head each time I turned the machine on. Telling me that I should write something. Anything!

I listened to music while I wrote what suited me and ignored my homework assignments. I considered my decision to not pick one line of music, since all music moves me in some way. Would this suffice as my excuse to not to pick a single line to expound on? Music in its grandest form soothes me to write. Crashes around me admonishing me when I don’t and supplies the rhythm when I am in a zone. That’s when the words populate the blank pages with gusto and the storyline explodes.

There are days when I write for hours listening to tunes from one station, then another. Setting the mood, relaxing my soul and jump starting the plot. A day of incessant writing, has me reflect. Is it possible fatigue of abundance has taken place? A day filled with thousands of words written not edited or critiqued. A rush to get as much and more on the paper before the thoughts die for the day from over work. If this is so, I say bring on the state of the glorious fatigued mind, any day.

I am not sure if I met the specifications of the homework assignments. But oh how I have enjoyed ignoring the task while I traveled with pen and paper to the places that beckoned me.

Note to Readers - Homework assignment (Use the words fatigue of abundance; and, Write something based on a line from a song that inspires you.) Above submission accepted by my peers
